Clinical Pathology Lab Supervisor
 
Position Summary:
  • Supervises and coordinates the activities of technologists, technicians, aides, and assistants performing moderate- to high-complexity clinical pathology testing

  • Ensures efficient, accurate, and timely reporting of test results and examinations

  • Performs routine complex clinical pathology tests requiring precision and professional judgment in selecting appropriate procedures

  • Conducts testing using manual methods requiring technical interpretation and automated analyzers, including maintenance and troubleshooting

  • Assists with the instruction and training of laboratory personnel, as well as laboratory and medical students or interns

  • Maintains laboratory supplies, equipment, and instruments and provides administrative support for daily operations

  • Maintains professional competency and stays current with evolving techniques and requirements in Clinical Pathology and chemistry

  • Performs duties under general supervision, referring issues to leadership only for policy clarification

  • Exercises independent judgment in day-to-day laboratory operations

  • Applies innovative procedures as needed to accommodate a wide variety of specimen types

  • Interacts daily with staff pathologists and laboratory technologists

  • Communicates frequently with external physicians and referring facilities

  • Plans and coordinates workflow to meet patient care requirements and ensure acceptable test turnaround times

  • Utilizes computer systems and the laboratory information system to accession specimens, report results, and collect quality assurance data

Education/Experience/Certification Requirements
  • Experience Requirements

    • Six years (72 months) of high-complexity CLIA laboratory experience, two of which must be in Clinical Chemistry

  • Education Requirements (one of the following)

    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Medical Laboratory Technology

    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Biology or Chemistry, including:

      • 6 semester hours in Biology

      • 6 semester hours in Chemistry

      • An additional 12 combined semester hours in Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Laboratory Technology

      • One year of full-time Chemistry experience or training in a CLIA-certified laboratory

  • Certification Requirements (one of the following)
    • MLS(ASCP) or MT(ASCP)
    • AMT MT or equivalent national certification

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Strong organizational skills to effectively interact with staff pathologists

  • Knowledge of current laboratory principles and procedures used in automated and manual chemistry techniques

  • Extensive knowledge of advanced laboratory theory, techniques, and testing related to clinical chemistry

  • Knowledge of group process techniques and team leadership used in meetings and on project teams

  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to formulate processes and develop procedures

  • Knowledge of quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and record-keeping procedures consistent with good laboratory practice and regulatory compliance, including CAP and CMS requirements

  • Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures

  • Effective teamwork and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of sample preparation procedures for chemical analysis

  • Write and review technical procedures with detailed instructions covering methodology, setup, and conduct of new or modified procedures

  • Supervise and train new employees and pathology residents in the maintenance and preparation of laboratory materials and equipment

  • Order and maintain laboratory supplies and reagent inventory

  • Develop, maintain, and review Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) programs in the laboratory

  • Coordinate instrument comparisons and AMR studies

  • Coordinate commercial laboratory proficiency testing (CAP)

  • Perform validation studies for new instruments, tests, and procedures

  • Coordinate and participate in research and development (R&D) projects

  • Work with administrative staff to prepare for inspections and surveys, ensuring regulatory body inspection readiness

  • Ensure continuous laboratory workflow by collaborating with other supervisors and communicating effectively

  • Directly supervise Chemistry Laboratory technologists and technicians, including planning, assigning, and adjusting work to maximize efficiency while maintaining accuracy and timeliness of results

  • Advise and assist personnel as questions or problems arise; troubleshoot and problem-solve as needed; perform bench-level testing

  • Monitor staff performance and collaborate with management on formal performance evaluations; develop performance goals and objectives for each staff member

  • Assist in employee recruitment and interview processes

  • Conduct periodic staff meetings

  • Perform timecard adjustments for assigned staff and review staff competencies

  • Coordinate personnel training, complete training checklists, and conduct competency evaluations

  • Interact professionally with physicians, staff, visitors, and all customers in person and via telephone

  • Participate in the laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program

  • Perform other duties as assigned
