Position Summary:
  • Supervises and coordinates the work of technologists, technicians, aides, and assistants performing moderate- to high-complexity anatomic pathology testing

  • Ensures efficient, accurate, and timely reporting of all test results and examinations

  • Performs routine complex anatomic pathology tests requiring precise techniques and professional judgment in selecting appropriate procedures

  • Conducts testing using both manual methods requiring technical interpretation and automated analyzers, including maintenance and troubleshooting

  • Monitors quality and compliance to support reliable diagnostic outcomes

  • Assists in instructing and mentoring laboratory personnel, as well as laboratory students, medical students, and interns

  • Maintains laboratory supplies, equipment, and instruments and provides administrative support for daily laboratory operations

  • Maintains professional competency and stays current with evolving techniques and requirements in Anatomic Pathology, dissection, and cytology preparation

  • Performs work under general supervision, referring issues to leadership only for policy clarification

  • Exercises independent judgment and decision-making in day-to-day laboratory operations

  • Develops and applies innovative procedures as needed to accommodate a wide variety of specimen types

  • Interacts daily with staff pathologists and laboratory technologists

  • Communicates frequently with external physicians and referring facilities

  • Plans and coordinates workflow to meet patient care requirements and ensure acceptable test turnaround times

  • Utilizes computer systems and the Anatomic Pathology information system to accession specimens, report results, and collect quality assurance data

 
Education/Experience/Certification Requirements
  • Experience Requirements

    • Six years (72 months) of high-complexity CLIA laboratory experience

    • At least two years of experience in Anatomic Pathology or Histopathology and Cytology

  • Education Requirements (one of the following)

    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Medical Laboratory Technology

    • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Biology or Chemistry, including:

      • 6 semester hours in Biology

      • 6 semester hours in Chemistry

      • An additional 12 combined semester hours in Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Laboratory Technology

      • One year of full-time Histology and Cytology experience or training in a CLIA-certified laboratory

  • Certification Requirements (one of the following)
    • HT (ASCP)
    • HTL (ASCP)

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Professional Knowledge & Technical Expertise

    • Extensive knowledge of advanced laboratory theory, techniques, and testing related to anatomic pathology and cytology

    • Knowledge of current laboratory principles and procedures used in gross tissue examination

    • Ability to perform a wide variety of histological preparation procedures for surgical, autopsy, and cytology purposes

    • Knowledge of standard laboratory safety procedures

  • Quality, Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

    • Knowledge of quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and record-keeping procedures consistent with good laboratory practices

    • Compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies, including the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

    • Develop, maintain, and review QA and QC programs within the laboratory

    • Coordinate instrument comparisons, AMR studies, and commercial laboratory proficiency testing (CAP)

    • Perform validation studies for new instruments, tests, and procedures

    • Work with administrative staff to prepare for accreditation inspections and surveys and ensure inspection readiness

  • Leadership, Supervision & Team Management

    • Directly supervise histology laboratory technologists and technicians

    • Plan, assign, and adjust work assignments to maximize efficiency while maintaining accuracy and timely reporting

    • Monitor staff performance and collaborate with management on formal performance evaluations

    • Develop performance goals and objectives for staff members

    • Supervise and train new employees and pathology residents in laboratory materials and equipment preparation

    • Assist in employee recruitment and interview processes

    • Conduct periodic staff meetings

    • Perform timecard adjustments and assess staff competencies

    • Coordinate staff training, complete training checklists, and conduct competency evaluations

  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills

    • Strong organizational skills to effectively interact with staff pathologists

    • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to formulate processes and develop procedures

    • Knowledge of group process techniques and team leadership for meetings and project teams

    • Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills

    • Interact professionally and courteously with physicians, staff, visitors, and customers in person and by telephone

  • Operations, Workflow & Continuous Improvement

    • Ensure continuous laboratory workflow by collaborating closely with other supervisors

    • Write and review technical procedures with detailed instructions for new or modified methodologies

    • Order and maintain laboratory supplies and reagent inventory

    • Coordinate and participate in research and development (R&D) projects

    • Perform bench-level testing as required

  • Professional Development & Other Responsibilities

    • Participate in the laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program

    • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Physical Requirements
    • Ability to push or pull equipment, instruments, and/or carts weighing up to 50 pounds

    • Work is performed indoors 100% of the time

    • Occasional exposure to chemical hazards as defined in the MSDS Manual

    • Classified as OSHA Exposure Classification I under OSHA exposure guidelines

  • Personal Protective Equipment
    • The position requires the use of personal protective equipment during various tasks/activities.  personal protective equipment includes, but is not limited to, fluid repellent lab coat, protective gloves, masks, and safety glasses.
