Extensive knowledge of advanced laboratory theory, techniques, and testing related to anatomic pathology and cytology.

Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to formulate processes and develop procedures.

Knowledge of quality control, quality assurance, and record-keeping procedures that constitute good laboratory practice and comply with regulations from agencies such as the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Perform a wide variety of histological preparation procedures for surgical, autopsy, and cytology purposes.

Write and review technical procedures with detailed instructions covering methodology, setup, and conduct of new or modified procedures.

Supervise and train new employees and pathology residents in the maintenance and preparation of laboratory materials and equipment.
-
Order and maintain laboratory supplies and reagent inventory.

Develop, maintain, and review Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) programs in the laboratory.

Coordinate instrument comparisons and analytical measurement range (AMR) studies.
-
Coordinate commercial laboratory proficiency testing (CAP).
-
Perform validation studies for new instruments, tests, and procedures.
-
Coordinate and participate in research and development (R&D) projects.
-
Work with administrative staff to prepare for inspections and surveys related to accreditation requirements and ensure regulatory inspection readiness.

Ensure continuous laboratory workflow by working closely with other supervisors through verbal communication.

Directly supervise histology laboratory technologists and technicians; plan, assign, and adjust work assignments to maximize efficiency while maintaining accuracy and timely reporting.

Advise and assist personnel as questions and problems arise; troubleshoot and resolve laboratory issues as needed.

Perform bench-level testing as required.

Monitor staff performance and collaborate with management to prepare formal performance evaluations.

Develop performance goals and objectives for each staff member.
-
Assist in employee recruitment and the interview process.
-
Conduct periodic staff meetings.
-
Perform timecard adjustments for assigned staff.
-
Review and assess staff competencies.
-
Coordinate personnel training, complete training checklists, and perform competency evaluations.

Interact with physicians, staff, visitors, and customers in a professional, pleasant, and helpful manner, both in person and by telephone.

Participate in the laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program.

Perform other duties as assigned.
